MECHANISMS OF MINERALIZATION ACTION FOR THERAPEUTIC PREVENTIVE TOOTHPASTE WITH HERBAL EXTRACTS AND POLYDON

Abstract:
Subject. The subject of this study is the toothpaste with herbal extracts and polydon. Objective. The study aims to find out the toothpastes that are most commonly used by senior students of the Dental Institute, as well as to investigate the effect of SPLAT Professional Healthy Gums Toothpaste with herbal extracts and polydon on mineralizing parameters of oral fluid. Methodology. The study is conducted by the Department of Therapeutic Dentistry and Propaedeutics of Dental Diseases, the Department of General Chemistry at Ural State Medical University. To achieve the outlined objective, to investigate the effect of SPLAT Professional Healthy Gums Toothpaste with herbal extracts and polydon on mineralizing parameters of oral fluid, the study group comprised 46 volunteers among students in the first, third and fourth years of the Dental Institute (16 males, 30 females) aged 18 to 24. The physicochemical properties of SPLAT Professional Healthy Gums Toothpaste were assessed using concentrations (1 %, 2 % and 3 %) of toothpaste solutions in water. Statistical analysis of results was performed using MS Excel software package together with a set of tools for medical statistics. The statistical significance was assessed using Student’s t-distribution. The results were considered significantly different at p ≤0.05 [2–6]. Conclusions. The elevated levels of phosphorus and calcium found in toothpaste water extracts increase levels of these two elements in the oral fluid of volunteer patients. Initially, an increase in phosphorus content in the toothpaste compared to the calcium content proportionally enhanced the phosphorus content in patients’ oral fluid. A temporary decrease in total Ca/P ratio in study participants’ oral fluid was observed, while the oral fluid was still oversaturated with necessary inorganic elements creating an environment that maintains the consistent structure of tooth tissues, that is mineralization (and remineralization).
